This standing seam metal roof in Lynn, IN replaced an old metal roof that was probably 70 to 80 years old on a two-story home. The job was completed in November 2025 and covers about 1,900 square feet. Under that metal was cedar shake over lath. The front porch had asphalt shingles over wood decking, and the back of the house had a flat roof with rubber roofing.
We tore all of it off: the rubber roofing, the metal roofing, the cedar shake, the wood purlins, and the shingles on the front porch. On the back, we added slope to the flat roof so it matched the roof right above it. We installed new 5/8-inch OSB decking on the roofs that had cedar shake, and replaced the rotten decking on the front porch.
Next, we installed ice and water shield on most of the roof and UDL 30 synthetic underlayment on the upper roof. Then we put on our standard standing seam trim system, which goes on before the roof panels. After that, we installed a 26-gauge, 1.5-inch double lock standing seam roof system on the entire roof.
The back of the house is where this job stands out. Instead of using transition metal where the low-slope roof meets the steep-slope roof, we ran one-piece metal panels all the way from the eave to the top, straight through the transition. Using one continuous panel from the eave to the top, running through the transition, reduces the chance of water intrusion in that spot.
We finished the project with a 6-inch gutter system and gutter guards on the entire roof, lifetime pipe boot flashings, and a ridge vent. The whole roof is textured cocoa brown, and the standing seam panel system is covered by a 40-year Euro-Lock warranty.
Why it matters
Why tear everything off instead of roofing over it?
Taking off the old metal, cedar shake, purlins, shingles and rubber roofing let us put new 5/8-inch OSB decking under the new roof and replace the rotten decking on the porch.
Why add slope to the flat roof?
Sloping the back flat roof to match the roof above it let one standing seam system cover the whole house.
Why one-piece panels through the transition?
Running each panel in one piece from eave to top, instead of using transition metal, reduces the chance of water intrusion where the low slope meets the steep slope.
