Is Stone-Coated Steel Roofing Worth It?

Stone-coated steel is worth it if you want the look of shingles, shake or tile with the strength of steel. It typically lasts 40 to 70 years, many products carry a Class 4 hail rating under UL 2218, and national cost guides put it at roughly $8 to $15 per square foot installed. It is not the best value if your goal is simply the longest-lasting, lowest-maintenance metal roof. For that, standing seam is hard to beat.

What stone-coated steel is

Stone-coated steel panels are sheets of coated steel pressed into the shape of shingles, shakes or clay tile, then covered in stone granules bonded on with an acrylic coating. The panels interlock in rows, much like a shingle roof, and most fasteners are hidden in the laps. From the street it looks like a traditional roof; underneath it is steel.

Pros

  • Traditional look. It suits neighborhoods, historic streets and HOAs where a standing seam profile would stand out.
  • Hail resistance. Many products are tested to UL 2218 Class 4, the highest impact rating. That can matter for insurance (see does a metal roof lower insurance?).
  • Long life. Typical lifespan estimates run 40 years and up, far longer than asphalt.
  • Light weight. Much lighter than real clay or concrete tile, so it rarely needs added framing.

Cons

  • More joints. Rows of interlocking pieces mean many more laps and fasteners than a standing seam roof with one panel from eave to ridge.
  • Granules wear. The stone coating can shed or scuff over time, especially where people walk. Check the granule-adhesion warranty, not just the steel warranty.
  • Not cheap. Installed prices often land in the same range as standing seam, so you are paying for the look rather than saving money.
  • Fewer installers. It is a specialty product. Ask how many the crew has installed.

Our take. Brothers Metal Roofing does not install stone-coated steel. If you love the shingle or shake look, we install painted metal shingles with a 30-year warranty. If you want the roof that lasts longest with the fewest places for water to get in, that is standing seam, roll-formed at your house with a 40-year Euro-Lock warranty. We are glad to walk through both on site.

Frequently asked questions

How long does stone-coated steel roofing last?

Most lifespan estimates run 40 to 70 years. The stone granule coating can wear sooner than the steel, so check the granule-adhesion warranty as well as the panel warranty.

Is stone-coated steel cheaper than standing seam?

Not usually. National cost guides put stone-coated steel at roughly $8 to $15 per square foot installed, which overlaps the $8 to $16 per square foot Brothers Metal Roofing sees for standing seam in western Ohio.

Does Brothers Metal Roofing install stone-coated steel?

No. We install standing seam, painted metal shingles, TuffRib and PBR panels, and copper.
